MATI Brown Bag Webinar Series presents Interpreting: A Lifelong Learning Experience

The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) is a multidisciplinary organization whose mission is to promote and enhance language access in health care in the United States. In 2011 we gave a presentation at the American Translators Association entitled “Interpreting: A Lifelong Learning Experience.” Expanding on this presentation and based on an historical overview of the concept of Lifelong Learning (Resnick and Wirth, 1996), the learning outcomes of this webinar are to clarify the terminology of education and training and what is called deliberate or structured learning as it pertains to the field of interpreting in general. It will include a synopsis of the key competencies required for an interpreter and why interpreters need to go beyond initial trainings of 40 hours, 50 hours, or even 150 hours of formal structured education and work towards lifelong learning, a concept concretized by certification programs through their Continuing Education Requirements. Enrica J. Ardemagni holds a doctorate in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin. She also holds graduate and undergraduate certificates in medical interpreting and she is an Indiana Supreme Court certified court interpreter. Professor Ardemagni is the Director of Graduate Studies and the Certificate in Translation Studies at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis where she teaches courses in translation, interpreting, and Spanish for Specific Purposes (medical, legal and business Spanish). She has served on nine boards including being one of the founding members of MATI where she also served two terms as President, and Administrator of the Literary Division of the American Translators Association. She is currently the Vice President of the board of NCIHC.
